piece of something...

So, this is a piece of something else I've been working on. The writing in blue I added today and I'm not really sure what I think about it. I like the rest of it. And I like what's implied but not said. If you all would give me feed back (especially about the blue), I'd appreciate it a lot. Thanks!

“I’ll be there in a second.”

“Don’t take too long. You don’t want to be late.” Fin sinks into the leather couch as he tugs on his tie. Even at age thirty-one and wearing ties every day at work for most of his adult life, Fin still felt uncomfortable wearing ties. He smiles as he hears Holly singing to herself as she finishes up her make-up in the bathroom upstairs and Fin thinks how lucky he is and how happy he is with his life. An envelope on the coffee table remind him of something and he reaches for the cell phone in his pocket. He listens carefully to Holly’s movements upstairs before typing in a number and hitting send. The machine rings four times before an electronic voice picks up and he waits impatiently for it to finish so he may leave his message.

“Hey, it’s me. Holly leaves Friday. I’ll be around for another three weeks, though, and I thought if you had some time off…” Fin pauses as he hears Holly start down the stairs, “Anyhow, I’ll check with you later.” Closing the phone quickly, Fin turns to find Holly standing in the doorway.

“Who was that?”

“Just needed to check in on the status of a shipment.” Fin slips his arms around her as he kisses her neck. “I have a better idea. Let’s skip the meeting and stay home. I can think of more fun things we can do here.” Holly laughs before tightening his tie a little and pulling away.

“I have to be there, you know that. Besides, I’ll make it worth you’re while.”

“I’m holding you to that,” Fin says as he locks the door.

“You do that.” Fin catches her before she can slips into the car.

“Hey, I love you.”

“I love you too.” She stands on tiptoes and kisses him gently. “Now, drive, Tiger.”

Half an hour later across town, a woman in a dark apartment presses the play button on her answer machine and a male’s voice fills the room.

“Hey, it’s me. Holly leaves Friday. I’ll be around for another three weeks, though, and I thought if you had some time off…” There’s a pause and the woman can hear high heeled shoes start down the staircase before the male voice continues, “Anyhow, I’ll check with you later.” There’s a click, followed by a few beeps from the answer machine signaling the end of new messages. Twirling the wine glass in her fingers for a few seconds, the woman contemplates the message as a smile begins to spread across her face. It’s followed by a chuckle as she holds down the delete button until the machine says, “Deleted new message.”

“I always have time off, Fin,” the woman says out loud before downing the last swallow in the glass and moving to the window to look out across the city. “I wonder what Holly would say if she knew.”
